Obama's Speech

In Barack Obama's speech that he gave on March 18, 2008, he opened with the phrase "We the people, in order to form a more perfect union." This quote automatically sturs up emotions for American citizens as it is the beginning of the United States Constitution. This single quote is what forms Obama's entire speech. He uses the history of our country to stir up feelings in his American listeners. The term "perfect union" is used throughout his speech to refer to what he wants this country acheive. He uses words such as "we are truly one" and "unity". By hearing these words, we the listeners become aware what he is striving for as a future president. He also uses the word change many times to remind us how far America has come since the time of slavery. He says that he believes since we were able to make such great strides, we can do it again. Obama is very effective in his word choice and repitition of words in order to get his point across. He uses events that occured in America's history such as slavery in order to show how far we have come.

photo essay

I came across a photo essay online that I found very insightful. It is a Time Magazine/CNN website that provides a slide show of the various foods that different cultures eat. At the bottom of each slide, it gives the country and that average amount of money they spend on food each week. I found it interesting to see some family eating such small amounts of food while other families ate extremely large amounts. For example, in Chad they spend on 1.23 on food per week while in the United States, families spend over 300 dollars a week for a family of four. The photos also depict how different families are among the different countries. In the United States photo, there were two adults and two children. In the photo from Cairo, the photo depicts seven adults and five children. I found the photo essay to be very powerful in portraying different parts of the world. Grammar questions

I have always had trouble grammar wise when it comes to knowing when to your who and whom. I thought I would research further by using google and typing in "how do you know when to use who and whom?" I came across the site http://ask.yahoo.com/20021113.html that explained some insight to my question. AskYahoo states that "who" is used as the subject of a sentence whereas "whom" is used as an object.
